Youth development is of the utmost
importance for the future of ice hockey. In the year 2000 the IIHF
started a project called Ice Hockey 2000 aimed at Western European
nations with the aim of improving development of quality ice hockey
players, officials and coaches. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy,
Austria and Slovenia were the first participating nations. One year
later Norway and the Netherlands joined the fold. The Ice Hockey 2000
program included the Learn To Play-project aimed at players up to 10
years of age and an international schedule of Hockey Development
Camps. In 2004 the program was extended to include nations such as
Belarus, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Spain.
The current Regional Hockey Development
camp format, gives players, aged 15, from over 20 nations a chance
to play with players from across the globe. The idea is to bring
four nations that are at a similar talent level, along with two
developing nations to compete and train for a week. The host nations
have 17 players, while the travelling nations have up to 15 players.
During the camp the learning process of the players is advanced by
mixing the players of the different countries in different teams.
The international squads are coached and managed by a staff from one
of the participating countries. The coaches, team managers,
equipment managers and a group of young, talented referees, will
fully take part in the learning process. At the Eindhoven camp
coaching expert Timo Tuomi from Finland and refereeing expert Arnoud
van Berkel from The Netherlands will be at hand for instruction.
